From that little town in California wine country, he runs his empire, a podcasting network, TWIT. For 30 hours each week, he and the other hosts on his network talk about technology -- topics like the best e-book reader or how to get rid of a computer virus -- for shows that he gives away online.

So what these statistics add up to is profound:

Internet Radio in cars has a significant value proposition. I’m not talking here about the kind of Internet radio we get today via a rather clunky cable linking a mobile device to a dashboard. My question paints the picture of an inevitable integration and personalization of the car dashboard where Internet-enabled audio is as easy and convenient and accessible as the over-the-air broadcasts which currently dominate the in-car experience.

What these numbers suggest is that our obsession to get receivers on mobile devices may be misplaced. Indeed, we need to worry about long-term relevance in that most mobile of devices: The car.

The auto dashboard of tomorrow will not look like today’s. It will be connected and customizable and personalizable to us. It will take on the flavor of the person behind the wheel. That is a technology game, not an FM chip game. It is an IP-driven game.

And if I were you I’d make sure I’m a part of it.

Dramatic growth: Internet radio explodes onto the scene.
The radio landscape today is significantly different than it was ten years ago.Internet radio has quickly taken hold in as many and more different places asterrestrial, now mirroring the new ways of delivering terrestrial radio (Chart 9).How does the reach of internet radio compare to other forms of digital music consumption? On a monthly basis 69 million U.S. adults have used internet radio and 49% of the total population has experienced it. Satellite radio, once thought to be the next great radio innovation of this century, has not fulfilled the promise of becoming the next radio delivery mechanism. While satellite radio reaches one out of five radio listeners, internet radio has already surpassed it in reach. Internet radio reaches 32% of active radio listeners on a monthly basis as compared to satellite, which reaches 21%. Terrestrial radio still leads with 83% reach of active radio listeners, but given internet radio’s growth rate, it seems poised to be the clear leader of the digital delivery pack. Internet radio currently reaches 43 million consumers weekly according to Arbitron and continues to grow: Since 2000 reach has grown more than 8 fold, and it grew four points (over 30%) in reach in the last two years (Chart 10). Who’s listening?Internet radio users tend to be more affluent and educated than the U.S. population as a whole (index of 160 for HHI $100K plus) and more educated (index of 127) and more likely to be employed (index of 126)—probably due to the high propensity for consuming streaming audio at work according to Arbitron.On mobile phones, music usage, on average, is popular with people in their late 20’s and at this point skews slightly more male according to comScore. As smartphones— the devices most capable of multi-media delivery —increase penetration in the U.S., it can be expected that the median age of users will become somewhat younger and the male skew will diminish over time. NPR CEO Schiller Says All Cars Will Have Internet Radios

Veering off into not-for-profit land, the recent "D: All Things Digital" conference in Rancho Palos Verdes, California, turned over the stage to National Public Radio CEO Vivian Schiller, who was interviewed by Kara Swisher.

Here are some highlights:

Schiller noted that they now just call themselves NPR, not National Public Radio. Ratings for NPR continue to grow, just hit 34 million listeners, averaging 6 hours a week. She says it is important for them to be on every platform, not just conventional radio. Our digital audiences are additive; there is no evidence of cannibalization going on, she says. The idea is to reach the most number of people.
Schiller says Internet radio over next 5-10 years will take the place of traditional broadcast radio.
She says they are not trying to do an end-round around their local stations on the Web; she says they want people to have a full spectrum of local, regional, national to international.
Pretty soon, she says, all cars will have Internet radio in one form or another.
Morning Edition is the most listened to show, and then All Things Considered. They are the tent poles.
Schiller says she is agnostic to how people hear their programming; for the listeners ear, it is identical, so why do we care, she says.
She says 40% of weekday listening is now in the car; once there is Internet in the car, people ideally will listen to the same stations in the car.
Schiller says they won't charge for listening; at the heart of the mission is to make the content available to people for free. Only 10% of listeners give. We will be free, if you choose not to support us through membership, then we will still be there for you.
Right now, stations get NPR programming for free for online broadcast; she says that could change once the stations make money online. But never will they charge to the end user.
On the overall news business, she says the business model is in the midst of creative destruction. Lots of new news organizations are springing up.
The iPad, she says, has been phenomenal, with almost 300,000 downloads of their app for iPad. She says it is designed specifically for that device; not for the iPhone, or the Web. You can listen, and experience NPR content in difference ways.
She says it is scary how little local and state reporting is happening right now; she says local NPR affiliates need to be there to fill in those gaps.
She concedes that she doesn't like pledge drives -- that no one likes them -- but they do work, raising $300 million a year.

The Danger to Terrestrial Radio posed by Internet Radio in Cars

One third of radio listeners would listen less to local radio if they had easy access to Internet Radio built into their cars.

That’s one of the alarming statistics from a recent national study I conducted in conjunction with VIP Research.

In the study, which was a national survey of more than 2,000 radio listeners covering 22 markets, I asked this question:

If tomorrow you could get Internet access from the dashboard of your car and you could listen to thousands of radio stations from all over the world through an Internet receiver on your dash as easy to use as your radio, would you…
a. Listen less to my local radio stations as I explore new ones online
b. Listen just as much to my local radio stations no matter what’s online

And here is the bottom line:

Now I know that predictions of future behavior are sketchy, but it’s notable that such a large fraction of listeners are ready to share their listening with Internet Radio simply because its easy and accessible with no knowledge of what, exactly, might be lurking there ready to entertain them.

And to those of you who say “yeah, but more folks say they’d keep listening just as much,” I must remind you that this notion of Internet Radio is cannibalizing a third of your audience sight unseen and sound unheard. Just imagine what will happen once trial occurs (ask somebody who has sampled Pandora or Slacker about that).

And what’s also notable is that this fraction varies by format. For example, among Alternative fans fully 50% say they would listen less to local radio!

I asked another question:

Which would you rather have, a radio in your iPod or mp3 player or an Internet radio and access to thousands of stations in your car?
a. radio in iPod/mp3 player
b. Internet radio in car
c. Not applicable
d. Don’t know

And the results were equally startling, with 61% preferring in-dash Internet Radio over 28% who preferred radio built into their iPods.

One of the reasons for Internet Radio’s advantage here, I suspect, is that some fraction of the listening base has no interest in mp3 players, whether or not those devices contain FM receivers. As an industry we need to recognize that while mp3 players surely cannibalize radio usage, they are not perfect substitutes for the radio experience for that portion of the audience who wants to take a purely passive role in entertainment consumption.
